As of yesterday... Wednesday November 16, 2011... The "Dixie Alley Storm Chase Team" is now
partnered with WREG News Channel 3 here in Memphis, TN. During active chases... We will be
providing WREG with streaming video of the chase and "phoners" if ask for. We as a team will be
able to get weather briefings from one of the stations staff "mets" that will assist us in getting a successful
intercept. This is a very good thing for both the team and for WREG.

I have just completed the upload of a few updates to the DASC website. The new code that I have dropped into place will make it just a little easier for me to add and/or modify the "Team Bios" area. The changes should also make the transitions a little quicker for someone navigating the site.

National Weather Service - NWS Memphis/Millington WSR-88D to Receive Dual Polarization Upgrade

During a two-week period, beginning November 28, 2011 and ending December 12, 2011, the Doppler radar in Millington (KNQA) used by the National Weather Service Forecast office in Memphis, Tennessee will undergo an upgrade to incorporate dual polarization technology.

Dual Polarization (or "dual-pol") technology will add an additional 14 products to the suite of data already available to NWS forecasters. These tools will assist forecasters in the warning and forecast process.

The first thing that most people think of when word "Dixie" is used to describe the South. And that is... The "Stars and Bars" (Confederate Battle Flag). I know... These days that image is not very "politically correct". But that flag does have a history here in the South... And it's not all bad. Even the state flag of Mississippi still to this day has the "Stars and Bars" incorporated into it.

Having said all of that... The updated logo that you see now reflects more of what the team's purpose in life will be. It is also... Politically correct.

Today was our Grand Daughter's (Shelby) birthday party. Her birthday was on the 7th, but her party was today so everyone could be there. The bottom line is that it was a great day today helping Shelby celebrate her 7th birthday. On the flipside of that... Tomorrow begins what I'm praying to be a very short endeavor. So very soon now... I will be calling it a night so I can get an early start in the morning.

So... Now in my attempt from this point going forward... This site will be totally dedicated to the organization and future activities of the "Dixie Alley Storm Chase Team". All posts from now on will be related to severe weather and DASC.

July 7th, 2011 - Shelby's Birthday

Well... Today is Thursday July 7th, 2011 and it's our Grand Daughter's 7th birthday. I guess that I blinked one time too many... I can't believe how quickly she is growing up. It seems like it was just yesterday that I was holding her in my arms in the hospital after she was born. But, I know that it wasn't. I have the extra grey hair to prove it. There are some days that I really do envy her youth. The things that she will see in her lifetime will be amazing!

Well...

It's back to work today after a three day weekend... And after what I saw last night... I'd say that the local fireworks stands around Memphis had a VERY GOOD 4th of July. Even though fireworks are illegal within the city limits of Memphis. I'm OK with the firecrackers and bottle rockets and such... But I'm not OK with the small arms fire. I have been up close and personal with gravity most of my adult life (skydiving)... And most of these people are either too drunk to care or don't seem to understand... What goes up, must come down ! They need to stop and think about what they are doing. That piece of lead that you have just sent skyward could kill someone a mile away. Please stop and think about what you are doing BEFORE you pull the trigger. That firearm is just as deadly shooting into the air as it is aiming at target.

Independence Day: A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 96. Southwest wind around 5 mph. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Tonight: A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 76. West southwest wind around 5 mph becoming calm. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Looking for team members

Good evening all,

The DASC is looking for Skywarn spotters and storm chasers that are interested in becoming members of the "Dixie Alley Storm Chase Team". The primary purpose of this undertaking is pretty simple... Intercept, photograph, capture video and relay the position of severe weather events to the National Weather Service in a timely manner. Currently... We do have a lot of good spotters in the area... However, there needs to be a more coordinated effort to target any and all severe weather that threatens the Memphis CWA. During Skywarn net activations in this area... I hear more dead air on 2-meter than reporting from the field.. The whole purpose of the Skywarn program is to assist the NWS in verifying that a severe weather event is occuring and in what direction it is moving. Without this information, it really makes the NWS forcasters jobs that much harder. But, most of you who are reading this post right now... Already knows this. So... If you are interested in making a real difference in this effort... Please let me know by return email or posted comments here. Let's see if the DASC can make a real difference during the 2012 severe weather season.

Storm Chasing and Social Networking

Hello Everyone,

Today is Friday, July 1, 2011 and I am officially kicking off this site today. I just want to start by sharing with you my thoughts on "Social Networking" and Storm Chasing / Storm Spotting. Although sites like Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, etc., are great for keeping up to date with friends and family. These sites should never be used as a replacement for normal emergency communication protocols during a severe WX event. You should never post to any site and just leave it at that... Hopeing that your post will be read by someone that can get the report out to the general public. There will be plenty of time to upload your post and/or pictures after your report is given to the NWS or other local emergency agency. You will always want to communicate your reports via cell phone or amatuer radio and/or Skywarn net activity. Case in point... Not more than a week ago during one of the numerous severe weather outbreaks... I read a post by a member of a chase team on FB where he was stateing that they were stuck in mud and were in the direct path of a tornado (he even included a photo of the tornado). Seriously !?! Call in the report... Drop the camara... And get the heck out of there! OK... Enough rambling for right now... It's early and I've only had about a half cup of coffee so far.
